Paul Maher, Jr., is a seasoned leader of Kerouac scholarship; what’s more, many of Kerouac’s family, friends, and contemporariesendorse the fresh, unbiased perspective he uses to retell the life and work of this great American writer.
In 1995, Maher served as chief editor of The Kerouac Quarterly, to which he also contributed, and wrote The Seeds of Galloway: Jack Kerouac’s Lowell (Eastern National, 1999), published for America’s National Parks system as an initiative to bring serious interest of their hometown son to Lowell. He has also taught a course on Jack Kerouac for the Lowell campus of Middlesex Community College and University of Massachusetts.
Maher’s Kerouac: The Definitive Biography (Taylor Trade Publishing, June 2004), is the first biography to be based entirely on primary sources. It is the most thoroughly researched and comprehensive life of Kerouac to date. It’s been selected by both Biography magazine and Vanity Fair for their “Hot Lists” and has received endorsements from the Kerouac Estate, composer David Amram (author of “Offbeat: Collaborating with Kerouac”), Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. Historian and journalist Douglas Brinkley (Rosa Parks; The Unfinished Presidency: Jimmy Carter’s Journey beyond the White House; and American Heritage”s History of the United States) has publicly praised the groundbreaking scholarship conducted by Maher.
In April 2005, Kerouac: The Definitive Biography was named finalist for Foreword magazine’s Book of the Year in the category of biography. It was reprinted in 2007 as Kerouac: His Life and Work (Taylor Trade). Maher is currently updating and revising this biography for future publication.
Maher has also edited the critically-acclaimed collection of interviews with Jack Kerouac titled Empty Phantoms: Interviews and Encounters with Jack Kerouac (Thunder’s Mouth Press) in 2005 and Jack Kerouac’s American Journey (DaCapo Press) in 2007. Taking a departure from Kerouac, Maher edited another collection of interviews in 2008, Miles on Miles: Interviews and Encounters with Miles Davis (Chicago Review Press), Tom Waits on Tom Waits: Interviews and Encoutners with Tom Waits (Chicago Review Press – 2011) and began pursuing independently released projects he was also working on at the time, the unpublished notebooks of Henry David Thoreau’s Extracts Related to the Indians. To date, Maher has published the first two volumes and continues working on the remaining ten notebooks.
Maher is currently interested in filmmaking and is at work with writer/director Caitlin Stuart on his first feature film. He is also writing a variety of screenwriting projects.
